Notes from a FatherWhat the Segway has done for Andy It has given him more freedom, a better state of mental health, and more physical movement. Andy was born with spina bifida and is paralyzed from the waist down. He has worked hard to learn to walk with crutches and a lower body brace. The Segway gives him a chance to do things he would not be able to do with his crutches. When we go to Hannaford’s or The Mall of New Hampshire, he can look around for his own clothes, move at his own pace, and keep up with everyone else; maybe even go a little faster! His self-esteem is 100% better and his braces are hidden. Andy did a Fundraiser called the Turkey Trot with his friends at school and likes being involved in school activities. Now, he’s a lot more able to do so. He was also at Church on Good Friday and rode his Segway from St. Jeans to St. Patrick’s, with snow covered sidewalks and construction as obstacles. He really likes being in control of his movements and he was able to do a lot of what other people were doing. He has a lot of determination and this Segway helps him to do a lot of the things he might not be able to do otherwise. By standing up on his Segway, it helps his circulation. Andy’s leg muscles are getting stronger. He has movement at the ankles and toes. At the same time, standing helps his heart, bladder, and kidneys. Andy’s body is in motion. If it were not, we know that his body would be weakened, and that would mean more medication and more trips to the hospital. With the help of this Segway, Andy truly is UNSTOPPABLE!!! |
